Birmingham Mens overcame Uni T 8-1 to make it 4 from 4 in division 3 this season.
Bears started convincingly, dealing with the sauna-like courts and super fast shuttles in impressive style. Ben and Ray balanced counterattacking play and reliable defence to take the first game in 2 while Raodi and Ka also won fairly convincingly in 2 games. Debutant pair Christian and Toby fought back hard to take the first game 21-18, before easing to a 21-12 win in the second in a match much enjoyed by dad/coach Richard.
The second round played out much the same with all three pairs taking their rubbers in 2 games. Finally, Ben, Ray, Toby, and Chris managed to make it 3 from 3. However, after a tough match Ka and Raodi came up just short, losing their rubber in 3 as some of happenings of the night before, and/or the thought of food began to catch up with them (or one of them in particular).
Overall it was a very good win against a strong side that keeps Bears on track for the title they have been trying for for the past few years. More importantly it was enjoyed by all as Uni T are top guys and old friends. But even more importantly, we got to go to Wing Wah afterwards for celebratory dim sum and god damn it was good!
Result: Uni T 1 - 8 Bears
Team: Ben (c), Ray, Ka, Raodi, Christian, Toby
Man of the match: Chris/Toby*
Next match: Home vs. North Birmingham Thurs 15th Feb
* This was a tricky decision because first I thought of giving it to the player who managed to win 2/3 rubbers despite throwing up half-way through one, but then I realised that it was all self-inflicted foolishness anyway. Then I thought perhaps Ka who suggested Wing Wah, but in the end I gave it jointly to Chris and Toby for winning all 3 rubbers in their first match in this league. Well done guys.
