Successful season for Bears

April 25, 2018

As the season draws to a close, let's take this opportunity to look back on the club's performances this season.

Mens Teams:
The Birmingham mens team stormed to the division 3 title winning all 8 matches and only dropping 11 rubbers all season. Andy's Worcester Mens 2 also came through division 2 comfortably, taking 9/10 matches. Meanwhile the Worcester mens first team narrowly missed out on retaining their premier league crown, finishing 2 points (though -16 rubber difference) behind Worcester this time around. Lastly, Ray's Solihull mens finished a respectable second in the top division, behind the impressive Solihull & Shirley. Bears can take some comfort in being the only team to beat them this year though.

Ladies Teams:
Worcester Ladies have pulled off a great survival mission in division 1 with one game still to play, despite losing two of our top players to pregnancy (sigh - I mean congratulations!). Birmingham ladies did finish bottom in division 2, but will come back stronger and challenge again in division 2 next year.

Mixed/Combined Teams:
Toby's Worcester mixed 2nd team smashed division 3 to get promoted, beating every other team on course to the title. Unfortunately both Worcester and Birmingham mixed teams were relegated from the top divisions in both leagues. However, Raodi's Solihull combined team rallied hard (see what I did there) to finish 3/4 in the league, and then narrowly beat off a challenge from University Medics to remain in the top division next season!

Singles Teams:
The singles team fought hard, and were rarely outclassed, but unfortunately only managed one win and finished bottom of the league. This is a new entry for Bears this year though, and we are confident of further improvement next season

All in all we feel we have had a lot of successes this year with three titles, and despite the 2 relegations, there was some excellent badminton all round. We are already looking forward to next season, and are stepping up our training over summer in preparation to do even better next year! Massive thanks to everyone that captained, everyone that played, and everyone that supported; and of course, Ka and Hieng for their organisation skills and dedication to the club.

If you are interested in getting involved with our teams next year, now is the perfect time to get in touch! We are looking for intermediate or above standard players to improve us and help us compete in all divisions. Contact us through the links below.
